supermarket saturdays welcomes Jellybeans
by k.o’brien jewelry
Today seems to be the official beginning to fall. It is warmer than
most autumn days today but the increasing number of crimson leaves
are making it quite clear that fall is here. As is the plentiful
harvest of apples at the farmers market. Every week our local
farmers seem to have more and more to offer and for that I am
grateful. Thanks to them we will have some fantastic end of season
pizza on the grill tonight. This…

THRIVE! Don’t Just Survive! Seminar with Bruce Baker
by Metalwerx
It’s a pet peeve of Bruce Baker’s to walk into a craft show, and see
merchandise displayed on a table that has not been raised. “A
tabletop is meant to sit and eat at,” he said. “Your customers are
standing. The difference is eight and a half to 12 inches!” Bruce is
a craft marketing expert with 30 years experience as both a jeweler
and successful businessman. He has sold to more than 120…

“Silver Streak” Spinning (hopefully) Top
by shelbyvision
My local gallery is putting on an exhibition of hand-made toys done
by it’s member artists, So I decided to make a top. This turned out
to be a bigger challenge than expected, because a top, to spin well
has to be well balanced, not an easy achievement on something that
is hammered out by hand. I decided to have an axis through the
center, a stainless steel bolt, which I modified slightly so the
head doubles as the point…

Fabrication: Modifying the elements for a better effect.
by jay whaley
A new student of mine recently asked my advice on a fabricated
pendant she had planned to mold and replicate by casting. It was
made out of curved lengths of square wire, soldered together. As I
looked at the construction, I realized that it would never mold and
cast as cleanly as the fabricated model she showed me, and I told
her so. The beauty of fabricated pieces is how clean and perfect
rolled stock can be assembled. The fact…

Student of the Week-Beth Sugarman
by jeanettecaines
Congratulations to our latest Student of the Week- Beth Sugarman.
Although my personal motto is “Too much is never enough.” this ring
illustrates how beautiful simplicity can be. It also illustrates how
it isn’t so easy to make something simple. Many students want to
make rings with their bezels sunk down into the shanks but fitting
and soldering often proves challenging. Here is how to pull it off
beautifully. The first key is to solder the shank closed. If you…

The Road and The Mobile Bench
by hansmeevis
The runway on St Maarten had to be extended and so a new road has to
be built around it. In doing so the the entrance to our shop has
been thoroughly fracked up. Luckily it is the height of low season
so not much is happening. This is the road as it approaches our
shop, and then it turns left, into Simpson Bay. Wonder Woman on the
road. I have now finished the wheel arrangement of my mobile…
