by k.o’brien jewelry

I am currently a columnist for tryhandmade. I write weekly posts
about Rhode Island artists. It has been great fun to roam my state
{through etsy’s shop local, of course} and discover talent I have
yet to meet. So, keep in touch with the RI art scene through my
series. Comment a little on the blog. Make some local suggestions
for me. Appreciate handmade! Please leave a comment, I would love to
see what is on your mind…

Student of the Week: Christina Hunt
by jeanettecaines

Congratulations to Christina Hunt, our latest Student of the Week.
These two 22k gold and Tourmaline bracelets represent no small
achievement. This much stone setting isn’t for the easily
discouraged. It’s a great project to hone your cabochon setting
skills. Cabochons date back to the ancient times before man
developed lapidary equipment capable of faceting stones. Although I
love faceted stones, cabochons have a plump tactile quality missing
from faceted stones. We…

What’s So Funny?
by Robyn Hawk

What’s so funny? Humor in CraftPeople of all ages and cultures
respondto humor enthusiastically and craft artwork definitely can be
very funny !Often, the work exudes a sense of the absurd due to
exaggerated size or by being executed in unusual materials. Craft
artwork can be highly ironic, political, sarcastic, or just plain
amusing, and it comes in a variety of media, such as metals, wood,
fibers, ceramics, glass, mixed media etc. Brigitte Martin has

welcome summer! eating outdoors in the city
by k.o’brien jewelry

This weekend was really some of the best weather of the summer thus
far. High seventies and not humid, pure perfection. After a great
day at Indie Arts Fest we spent Sunday taking it slow and enjoying
the day. I suppose we just celebrated a Sunday as people do. We ate
outdoors in the courtyard at Olga’s. Even though I could see the
brick buildings of the city it seemed like an escape. Surrounded by
tall hedges and trees we…

Time, Space Saving tools from PMC Conference
by Elaine Luther

The Jool Tool in action. The most compact polishing motor ever has
got to be the JoolTool, demo’d in the vendor room by Rio Grande. You
hold the work under the abrasive or polishing wheel. Could take some
getting used to if you’re used to the traditional type of polishing
motor. The primary advantages seem to be the incredibly small
footprint and that you can hook it up to a shop vac. (Just get those
ear plugs first) Check it…

Right after my first session with Deb I asked for a basic list of
hammers to purchase. The list was for a 400 g raising/forging
hammer, a 200 g border/raising hammer, and a 100g, 200 g, and 400 g
embossing/sinking hammer. These were my first 5 hammers, all by
Peddinghaus. I have since added a 300 g bordering hammer and a 170 g

Tips and Tricks for Life
by noelyovovich

I learned two really important things at the PMC conference, and
neither of them was about PMC. I attended this year’s conference in
West Lafayette, Indiana, and gave two presentations on metalsmithing
for metal clay, including both soldering techniques, and ways to
avoid needing to solder. But more about that later. The
presentations I attended were great, especially Bruce Baker, who
talks no-nonsense about the business of art. I’ve heard him twice

Gemstone Lamination Notes.

A piece of aquamarine and a piece of amethyst is the starting point.
Then I grind and polish it to this shape. A sort of yin yang thing.
I use seat check powder to spot the high points. It is a spray
powder that shows the touching points with a darker colour. Very
strong tool. Until I get it to fit without light shining through.

It’s all in Transition
by Michael Johnson

The hardest part of beginning is figuring out when to stop, because
nothing is ever really finished. Something was done to it before I
got it. It even came from somewhere before that. I just roll it into
sheets and pull it into wires. Cut it out and bend it into shapes.
Grind the stones and rub them till they shine. I heat it till it
becomes one piece. Set the rocks into it. Change the surface of it,

by James L. Sweaney, CGA, FGA. GG

The desire and ability to exploit our environment and to utilize and
improve the natural materials we find is rooted in our deepest past,
and is in fact, part of the reason we are here today. I was
absolutely fascinated by an article in the August 2010 Scientific

Cuttlebone Casting
by John Rasmussen

Working on a class project; I used a cuttlebone (usually used in
bird cages) to serve as a mold for a casting. I made a wax model of
a labrum (symbol uniting the Greek letter chi and rho), then
impressed it slightly into the soft part of the cuttlebone. Then the
form was carved from the cuttlebone using brass handmade tools. I
then melted pewter in a crucible and poured it into the mold
(gravity flow of the liquid metal)…

The recorded history of metalsmithing indicates that humans have
been working with metal for over 7000 years. I suspect and imagine
that our involvement with this material goes back much further in
time than that. My 40 years of practicing this ancient craft is just
a blink of the eye in the long succession of the tradition, but I
like this sense of connectedness to the past. I am directly

This picture is of the composite stone I am cutting now at 8000

surface polishing slowly and new scratches appearing easily. This
stone was only possible because I have a Darkside Lap, made by Jon

How To Rejuvenate Old Silver Jewelry
by laynefreedline

Last week, when my own sister brought me a bunch of “old” jewelry
that she was going to “throw away” it really made me realize how the
proper care for jewelry is relatively unknown to most folks. She

uncertain as to why the items didn’t hold the same beauty as they

by Laurie Jane Kern

In Silversmithing by Feingold and Seitz (and a few other books on
making holloware) they discuss raising using the “crimping” method.
To do this you need a stake that has a groove or shallow long
concave depression in it. You use this groove to put linear
depressions that radiate out from the base/center. This initial
crimping results in the sides rising up. Then as you progress to
raise the sides further, you hammer and distribute these crimps.
Finding a crimping…
