Well its out. … the new season of Downton Abbey is about a big
wedding between Captain Crawley and Lady Mary. What makes this
relative to this forum is, (drumroll) who will design the ring ? Is
She / He an Orchidian ? will they use a vintage piece ? or will it
be a modern design re-creation ? and will we in the Bridal jewelry
trade be seeing an increase in requests for rings similar to the
lady Mary ring for our clients ?- goo

I just watched the episode, and the ring is not either shown or even
alluded to. Mary does wear a lovely diamond spray of leaves in her
hair, though.
Well, I remembered to ask Colin and Sophie, who make the jewellery
for the Downton Abbey productions and I am told that the producers
decided not to use the ring he had made and bought a plated copper
one from Marks and Spencers, a well known chain store that is better
known for its clothing and food. The plating rubbed off in no time at
all and they got him to replate it which made negated any saving they
had made by buying a lookalike instead of precious metal.
it is common for decent jewellery to go missing on set and is often
written into major actor’s contracts they can keep the clothes,
jewels etc that they wear, never mind who actually owns them.

I have made jewelry for many movies and television shows. I usually
supply the production company with at least three copies of the
work. Some gets lost, some gets kept. I love doing this as
afterwards, I frequently get to dress actors for awards shows!
Always fun seeing my work in print and on the news. and even more
fun having deBeers calling to wonder who the heck I am? lol
