Yellow Ochre

OFFICE MEMO Yellow Ochre Date: 10/31/96

If you should not place a piece that you used yellow ochre on into the pickle
pot, they how should you remove the yellow ochre before you place the item in
the pot?

Who said ochre shouldnt go into the pickle pot ??(Sparex, I assume). My
small pickle pot is about 15 years old ; the lining is glass and , and
the solution doesnt seem to be affected by ochre.

Yellow ochre is iron oxide and you should not get iron in your pickle
since it can cause discoloration and other problems.Cleaning with a
tooth brush and ammonia or in an ultrasonic before pickling works in
most cases.I usually avoid the use of yellow ochre by using crosslocking
tweezers or some other heat sink…localizing the heat of the torch to
the area to be soldered is usually possible…

Well it doesn’t hurt the pickle pot but I was told that then you end up
with a faint coating of yellow ochre over your entire piece that can make
successive solderings improbable. I’ve never used yellow ochre but have
read this info and been told by instructors not to use it…Dave

Steve: I haven’t done this myself but I’m pretty sure you let the piece
cool down a bit then quench in water, then wash off the yellow ochre under
running water then pickle after its clean. One of my instructors told me he
always had students who’s pieces wouldn’t solder for some reason and found
out the kids were throwing yellow ochred pieces into the pickle pot…DAve
