[YAK] E-commerce website development?

Hi Gang! I’m in the midst of building and preparing to launch my
first website, using Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, and am wondering if
any of you could offer some advice on the use and implementation of
‘shopping carts’. The whole gamut of e-commerce is a new “onion” to
me – I’ve made sales via contacts I’ve made here and on other
listservs I contribute to (or mentor for), but have never gone whole
hog into it, as I’m about to – and the learning curve’s a bit
steeper than I’d anticipated. At present, the only payment vehicle I
have is Paypal, and while I’ve heard that they offer a shopping cart
(or someone else does, as an applet), I don’t have any experience
with it or any other, for that matter. Can anyone out there offer a
pointer (or three) on how to mount and use these? Or, for that
matter, are there other routes you’ve used which have worked as well
and have been as easy on the potential customer’s shopping
experience? For what it’s worth, I’ll be offering several different
product lines on the site (which will be at <www.turetdesign.com>,
hopefully starting in early December), and so am also wondering if,
in similar cases, those of you who have e-commerce sites
up-and-running use any sort of software to departmentalize and
monitor the relative successes of each line offered. Thanks, in
advance, for whatever insights you can offer me on this!

All my best,
Douglas Turet
