This workshop will focus on the creation of patterns in laminated
metals for Mokume Gane, or wood grain metal. We will begin the
workshop with a demonstration of laminating a mokume billet. This
demonstration will help students understand the processes and
techniques for laminating the billet, however, this class
concentrates on different patterning options for Mokume. We will use
processes such as chasing, repousse, chip carving, drilling, milling,
grinding, forging, and re-lamination to develop a variety of patterns
in laminated metals. We will also explore the challenges presented in
forming the patterned materials into finished works.
