Karen Flynn
New Westminster, Canada
I have been making jewelry off and on for over 25 years after taking
a 10 month metalworking course. I worked for a small jewelry
manufacturer (10 employees) for 9 years, 2 years in the polishing
room and 7 years as the sole worker in the wax department. In
addition to the regular maintenance of the wax department (injecting,
inventory) I also helped with mold making, investing and casting. I
was also involved with custom order work, talking to the customer,
carving waxes for one of a kind piece and working closely with the
goldsmith and stone setter as a team. I was also involved in
creating the occasional new design for the store showcases.
I currently work full time in an unrelated occupation, but have a
member ship in a local jewelers guild. I make several pieces each
year for fun and interest. I work mainly in silver with semi
precious stones, and sometimes use copper or brass. I really like
doing random filigree and would like to make more pieces with this
technique. In the future when my full time work commitments are less
I anticipate spending more time at the bench.
