David Walker
Ocean Beach, Denmark, Western Australia

I am a contemporary jeweller, public artist and occasional writer
and curator. I was the inaugural head of Curtin University of
Technology’s jewellery and metal courses and have held the positions
of national chair of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of
Australia (JMGA), and president of Craftwest (now FORM). My major
interest in jewellery is to explore ideas and forms that connect
jewellery and objects with contemporary life. For me this takes two
forms: the first is to find ideas that express aspects of my life
and that of my society; the second is to explore these ideas through
forms, materials and technologies that are unique to the times we
live in. This is a constant challenge as history, habit and
mainstream commercial culture are always pulling towards the
manufacture of commodities. My aim is to extend the conventional
boundaries of jewellery and objects in order to (re)discover the
poetry within.
