I am 51 years old and have been interested in gems and minerals
since I was a small child. I cut my first cabochon when I was ten
years old. As a youngster the late Don Charlton took me under his
wing and tutored me in the lapidary arts. Don was one of those
remarkable Depression/WWII era me n who was a walking encyclopedia,
could work 50 hour work weeks, and still have the energy to raise a
family, pursue a half-dozen hobbies and interests, be an active
participant in the local mineral club, be a Scout Master,
participate in his church, and still find time to encourage and
educate new comers to the hobby. No one ever left Don’s basement shop
without a handful of slabs or specimens that Don had collected
and/or slabbed and generously shared with visitors. He was a true
inspiration! However, I eventually let life overtake my interest in
lapidary and I was absent from it for over 15 years. I became active
again in 2006. Since then I have taken back up slabbing and cabbing,
learned faceting, and have recently begun silversmithing and am now
learning casting. My current ob sessions are Kentucky Agates and
Turquoise.
