I looked over the recent discussions about resin and still can’t find a good answer to this question. I am still in need of a hard, clear, doming resin resin that can be died. It can be either two part or UV. Any that I have used don’t cure hard enough for my purposes. Maybe they don’t exist. I pour it into various shaped bezels to get specific colors into a piece. Thanks for any help…Rob
Rob,
The Woodshop program at the school that I work at uses a very hard two part resin that is inlayed into various kinds of cut outs in wood tables (and other objects). They often use their resin with various natural holes and divets in tables made from rough cut slabs. The polished or satin finished resin in the tables is incredibly beautiful. I’m pretty sure that the resin that they use can be dyed.
The only thing I’m not sure of is that you’re asking for a doming resin? Should I ask them what they use? I’ll see them later today. I know that their two part resin is very hard after it’s cured.

Hi Rob,
would cold enamel epoxy resin work for you? I have seen a few different brands in jewelry catalogs…

Thanks! I have used Colores and don’t like it. I have used some Resin Obsession products that kind of work and I have a call into them to see if they can recommend a better one. They are a good resource. I also use Alumilite. It works fine, but doesn’t really dome. Jeff, doming makes it look like a cab…Rob
Rob, I have used Ceramitation, now called Ceramit. Here’s a quote from ishor:
Has a hardness of 60-75 on the Sward scale (kiln fired enamel has a hardness of 65-80).
It can be scratched, so if you need harder this might not do what you want, but it is pretty tough.

Hi,
the resin obsessio video shows a pendant that looked nicely domed…are you wanting a harder resin
Rob, I have found Ceramit to have high surface tension. If it is in an enclosed space it will definitely wick up the sides to form a meniscus. If there is nothing for it to climb, and if you let it thicken before applying, it should dome. Unfortunately Ceramit plus hazmat fee can be pricey to just try and see.

hi Neil,
i just love vendors who reveal pertinent info like that…hardness…!
…so hard to find vendors that give good info…
point in case…my sandpaper debacle!

Neil…At your advice, I have looked at this before and then lost track of the search. I typically resurrect this question each time that I pour resin. The resin that I have is out of shelf life and it is a chance to start over with a product that might more meet my needs. Thanks for the help…Rob
Rob, I spoke with the Woodshop folks at my school. They use West System epoxy for filling various wood working projects.
They said the company makes various kinds of epoxy primarily for boat builders. I’m not sure if anything they make will help you, but that’s the info that I got.
Best of luck!
Jeff
Thanks!..Rob
I have been looking at Durenamel. Does anyone use it and what is your experience vs 2 part resin. Thanks…Rob
