All-Day Opal Carving Workshop

Derek Levin began carving hard woods 35 years ago. But no matter
how intricate the carving, wood just stayed wood. Fifteen years ago
Derek discovered and began carving Opal. “I’ve carved many kinds of
stone, but the color, sensuality and complexity of opal keeps
challenging me,” he says. “An opal makes its own statement, so the
carver must listen to the stone.” Aside from carving Derek has
taught college English and has been writing articles for the
Lapidary Journal for 6 years.
