The solution I chose became a combination of most all the responses. I purchased thick leather type finger cotts; similar to the farm work gloves; ordered the split mandrels and with 320 grit it cut fast enough to reduce time = less heat!! Thanks to ALL for the advice. So now I am exploring which wheels cut the edges/ends the way I want them to look. This forum is irreplaceable. I made another discovery/solution which I will post.
