The future of CAd/CAm and 3D printing

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and co-founder of PayPal and Tesla
Motors, has made this video showing the new modeling software
they’re using at SpaceX to develop their rocket engines.

It’s pretty remarkable and I suspect will eventually find its way
into every industry that involves three dimensional design.

Have a look.

Eventually is now.

The leap motion controller that he was using is available for $80

Siemens nx software is available, but very expensive. However the
leap controller should work with other software too.

The goggles, yea. Hopefully stuff lie that will get smaller, lighter
and cheaper soon.

we're on the verge of a major breakthrough

I’m not sure why he said on the verge. The technology is here. He
just printed in titanium. And the prices are falling. There are now
sub $5k printers.

As far as the leap, it looks cool, but it doesn’t work as well as a
Space Pilot Pro. My left hand moves the object just like I would in
traditional carving, i. e. brings it closer to my face, rotates it,
etc. My right hand does the ‘carving’, just with a mouse.
