The BATTWing lap a new faceting tool

As a commercial trade faceter I have a keen interest in lapidary
products that can provide more efficiency. Well known in the
faceting community are the Gearloose laps which are rapidly becoming
the standard with the BATT and the relatively new Darkside. The latest
innovation is the BATTWing lap which has an outer ring of BATT with
an inlaid Darkside polishing centrering. The BATT part is charged
with 3,000 diamond in oil and the Darkside part with AlOx in water.
To use this lap, a facet is shaped and prepolished with the BATT
outer ring and then wiped clean and polished on the Darkside inner
ring. The next facet is then indexed. My experience with the Darkside
lap has shown that a perfect alignment of the facet with the lap
results in an almost instantaneous polish that preserves sharp facet
edges. The outer pre-polishing ring provides that perfect alignment
every time with every facet. No more missed indexes to gouge the
lap. No more damaged facets with incorrect angles. For minor repairs
and for repolishing abraded stones the BATTWing makes for a quick one
lap job. This for me is an unexpected pay raise which may have
influenced my enthusiasm for this lap but so far I have heard nothing
but similar enthusiasm from other owners…

Hear, hear!

I immediately ordered one for myself when I read Tony’s email. Jon is
one of the very, very best around and has revolutionized the
direction of gem cutting and polishing for thousands of cutters world
wide. And to this day he still teaches this old dog new tricks.
