Have heard the name Demontoid Garnet used I believe for the same
stone…Anyone?..Gavin

Nope, Demantoid & Tsavorite are 2 different garnets. Demantoid is a andradite
garnet (RI 1.88) while tsavorite is a grossularite garnet (RI 1.74). The
demantoid can usually be id’d by the ‘horsetail’ seen in the cut stone. The 2 can
be quite close in color at times.

I was great to find out the difference in the tsavorite, demontoid and
others…I wonder if you can describe the demontoid inclusions as
feathers …??..Gavin

Gavin,
There may be ‘feathers’ in a demantoid also, but the defining characteristic is
the ‘horsetail’. Once seen it’s never forgotten. Picture a horse’s tail as it
leaves the body, then sort of fans out.
