Tall ring shank gauge

I’m needing advice on the minimum gauge for a size 8 sterling silver ring with a 18 x 13mm fine silver bezel set cabachon. The shank will be tall, about 7 mm high.

Because this is a tall shank I’m thinking 18G sheet would get too heavy, clunky and thick.

Wondering if 20G sheet (with an upset edge) would be sturdy enough and hold up well.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I use .5 mm regularly and up to 1 mm often. One can file the top edge down to make folding/forming the metal to hold the stone easier.

Hi,

for the shank, right?

…what style of shank are you considering?…a uniform width band…?…a tapered band?…

Cigar band style

Hi,

personally, i would say in the range of 18gg (1.0mm) to 14 (1.4mm) for a cigar band type band…

Thanks, I’m going to try the 18 gauge. My hope is that the width being higher will give more stability overall, more surface area. There’s applied physics here I think!
I appreciate the help!

Hi,
ok, good decision!…i think 18gg at a minimum, will give the shank some heft and not appear “too thin”…be less less likely to deform with wear…and look more substantial.
