Specific jewelry technique please

Hello:

I am looking for a jewelry technique that involves:

  1. putting stones in the desired configuration.
  2. gluing them together,
  3. painting the edges of this and the back with some medium then
  4. dipping the stones in a bath of something,
  5. then a bath of gold?

steps 2 & 3 may be reversed- not sure.

Finished result is stones edged with , in this case gold colored
finish.

My question: What is it called and how is it really done. I would
like to learn and use this technique

Kind regards,

Electroforming, which is a special variety of electroplating. What
you paint on is an electrically conductive material that sticks to
the non-metallic gems and provides a foothold for metal to plate out
of solution. The paint can be either silver or copper. I believe
LJ had a big article many years ago, but there must be plenty of
info out there that’s much newer.

Dear Jeanine,

I believe you are hoping to electroplate these pieces. There are
certain precautions as far as what sorts of stones you wish to use.
To the best of my university studies memory, anything with calcium
must not be put into the plating baths. Try contacting plating
companies and see if they can help you develop these ideas further.
