Solder training

Well apparently I piddled around too long and now all the William
Holland classes that I could have attended this summer are already
closed. I sent an e-mail yesterday asking about being put on a
waiting list, but have not heard back.

So are there any other suggestions for a workshop or training that’s
heavily soldering-oriented somewhere this summer, that I can afford,
and that’s going to be meeting sometime between 5/15 and 6/5?

Thanks.

who really really needs a REAL refresher on soldering, since the kid
at the craft studio who was supposed to be giving me a "refresher"
wasn’t any better at it than I am. Nice kid, but he’s a photography
major, after all…

Zen,

Don’t know where you live, but the Boca Raton Museum of Art School
in Boca Raton, Florida will have summer classes. The schedule is
not yet out but I expect it will be out in another few weeks. My
two fabrication classes will be 4 weeks long and meet three hours
each Monday morning from 9:00AM to 12:00PM and Tuesday evening from
6:30 to 9:30 PM. The cost of each class will be somewhere in the
$140 range plus a student fee of about $30. I can’t give the exact
dates or prices as yet because we haven’t finalized everything.
Many students take both classes to excellerate the process. Of the
six subject areas I cover in these classes, soldering is paramount.
If interested, call the school at 561-392-2503 for further

Sojourner,

I have a Silversmithing school in Asheville NC. Not far from William
Holland. Your dates will be hitting about the end of the Spring
session that starts on March 30th. Maybe I can work something out for
you as I also do private lessons. Please contact me off list.

Anyone visiting the Hollywood, Florida area can feel free to contact
me about a soldering demonstration. I’m not an expert, but I’d be
happy to show anyone what works for me. It wouldn’t be your
campus-type workshop, but I guarantee you’ll leave with a
bezel/backing plate/bail mounting that you made yourself, and the
knowledge to get you started soldering. I’ve never held soldering
classes or workshops, but prior instructor experience in another
field will serve, I believe.

The coralnut also teaches fabrication up in Boca Raton. The man
knows how it’s done, for sure. You can find info on their classes at
www.bocamuseum.org. Maybe Don will chime in with more info.

Unfortunately this won’t work for me - I’m in Missouri, and I need a
workshop that’s compressed in time and running between March 24
through April 2, May 12 through June 11, or August 6 through
August 20. So I only have to make the drive once. The price is
right, but the location is too far for this to be feasible for me.

But maybe someone else on the list can use the info - it’s so hard
to find some of these programs! My own experience with the local
university metals class was dismal, I know there are lots of folks
out there struggling with these issues too.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Sojourner,

Chris Hentz is in Baton Rouge and he’s a master at teaching
intensive soldering workshops. I don’t know how long it would take to
get there from Missouri, or if he will be teaching during your time
frame, but I would at least try emailing him: chentz@attglobal.net

He’s a wonderful, generous, funny guy and, who knows, he just might
be open to doing a “tutorial.”

Good luck!
