Smiths Little Torch Oxy Regulators

Hi all,
I was wondering If anyone knows If I can put the smiths little oxy line on an Olson, Victor style regulator. The tank is mc size. I was thinking about using the large oxy tank along with a 1lb propane tank for indoor use. I don’t really want to buy a completely different tank and regulator setup. I don’t own the smiths little torch, but looking into getting one and that’s a question I would like to solve before purchasing. Thanks

You better go talk to a welding shop that sells this equipment. You can probably cobble together what you need, but I am concerned about it being safe. MC is an acetylene tank size. Are you talking about the 20 CF tank that typically goes with an MC acetylene tank? I don’t know how you install an adjustable regulator on a 1 lb. camp stove propane cylinder. They typically use a non-adjustable regulator. I am not sure if you would want a non-regulated propane and regulated O2 setup. You also need to look at flashback/check valves. Again, talk to a shop that sells this equipment and the gases that they use. You might consider an O2 concentrator. They pair well with 1 lb. propane and the Little torch. Good luck…Rob

Rob, beat me to it.

Is this the regulator that you’re talking about?

Also, is this the oxygen tank that you’re talking about. As Rob pointed out MC is an acetylene tank, but there is an oxygen tank that is a comparable size to an MC acetylene tank as shown here at Otto Frei. Is this the oxygen tank that you’re talking about?

If that’s the case, your Olsen oxygen regulator should work.

But also as Rob mentioned you are going to have to buy a special Little Torch regulator to fit a 1 lb camp stove propane tank.

This is the regulator that you need to get to connect a 1 lb propane tank to the Little Torch. (You need the red one. Red is alway fuel and green is alway oxygen)

Like Rob said, you should get flashback arresters and if you’re not sure about any of this, you should reach out to a jewelry tool company or a welding supply company. You don’t want to make any errors with explosive, flammable gases.

Hope that helps!

Jeff

Sorry for the unspecified tank size, yes, it’s a 20 cf oxygen tank. I sure can talk to my local welding supply. As for the concern in the two different size tanks as Rob mentioned, I just need to keep oxy pressure at a stable psi output.
@jeffg-moderator Yes to all three of your questions of topic

On a different note (as I just learned today) I heard this particular torch is a counterfeit to the real Smiths Little…

I do notice that it is cheaper than the ‘real’ Smiths Little. Anyone have any opinion if it is any good, I certainly wont buy a 20 dollar amazon torch, but wondering if this is a decent alternative. I fits the budget a bit better>

The Little Torch will work fine with full size regulators. You may need hose adapters as the Little Torch has “B” fittings and the standard regulators usually have “A” fittings.
It looks like the LT that Pepe is selling is a standard LT but without any regulators. Probably just what you need.
Also, if you already have a 20 cu ft Oxy tank it will work great but you can get a 40 cu ft tank filled for just a little more than the 20 (actually, it doesn’t cost much more to get an 80 cu ft tank filled, but an 80 is pretty heavy.)

“On a different note (as I just learned today) I heard this particular torch is a counterfeit to the real Smiths Little…”

I’m confused? Are you saying that someone told you that this isn’t a genuine Little Torch? I don’t know who told you that, but I don’t believe this to be true. The Little Torch is something that often goes on sale by most of the jewelry tool companies. The fact that it’s a little less expensive than other places right now doesn’t mean that it’s a counterfeit torch.

Smith was bought out by Miller Welding Equipment a while back ago. It’s still the Smith Little Torch, but with a different owner. Maybe that’s what this person is talking about?

If you believe that Pepe, a reputable jewelry tool company, is selling a counterfeit Smith Little Torch, you should ask Pepe directly.

Jeff

I have read that there are some “alternate” sources of Little Torches that may be of less quality than the real thing. They can be identified by control knobs and valves that are a different color and quality than the real Little Torch and hoses that are simple PVC hoses covered by a loose fabric cover. I recently replaced my 45 year old Little Torch and made sure that what I was buying was from Miller. If the price looks too good to be true, the torch is probably a knockoff. Good luck…Rob

Hi Michael -

I would like to assure you and anyone reading this that is absolutely not the case. SMITH is an incredibly famous brand and this is a very serious accusation. Pepetools would never and has never misrepresented any item or brand in our catalog. The torch that you mention is manufactured by Smith, and purchased from Smith. This Smith torch from our website, along with any other branded product is without a doubt genuine. This can be confirmed by contacting the manufacturer Smith directly. Pepetools as a brand manufactures hundreds of products which are of course genuine as well. We are all too familiar with copies of our products and knock-offs on the marketplace, so of course we would never do the same to another. I am curious where you learned this. Please reach out anytime if we can be of assistance, and rest assured that everything we sell is 100% Genuine marked with the manufacturers name, and in general most of our products are manufactured in house by Pepetools. Smith is a Miller product that we purchase via Miller distributor and resell through our website.

We recently put out a video with the great Dave Wilson on how to properly setup a Smith torch, check it out here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr_dYRLcR_A&t=218s

I just talked to the owner of Pepe. He said that they have no idea where this rumor started, but it’s not true. They only sell, the genuine Little Torch.

LIke Alonso said this is a “basic” kit meaning that it doesn’t have any regulators or tanks and is probably just what you need. It’s the torch handle, tips and hoses. You can buy the disposable propane tank regulator separately if you need it. (You know that you can use a Little Torch with oxygen/acetylene right? It sounds like you already have an MC acetylene tank and a small oxygen tank if you want to save a little bit of cash).

Anyway, the counterfeit Pepe Little Torch mystery is solved!

@Pepetools @jeffg-moderator Okay, it seems that I offended some of you here. For starters, I didn’t specify that I was in on the rumor, just asking how people felt about the torch (I apologize if my question didn’t come across as a question). Maybe as Rob stated, “alternate” may be a better term, not counterfeit. I know for certain that SMITH and MILLER are very good brands, heck, MILLER makes killer welders, for us in the welding.

I for one would like to stay on the good side of PepeTools, so if any offense was taken I didn’t mean it.

Back to the subject of topic… thanks for all your help.

No worries on my end! I didn’t think that Pepe was selling a counterfeit Little Torch, but I had to make sure. David Aizenman is great guy who is super passionate about his company. Most business owners are. Feel free to email him if you’d like: david@pepe.com I’m sure he’d be happy to talk to you.

But if your question is about whether folks in the forum like the Little Torch or not, there’s many threads on that topic.

Personally, I like the Little Torch and its tips as they are, but a lot of folks in the forum like to change out the Little torch tips to either ImpGem tips or Paige tips.

Here’s a fairly recent lengthy thread on that topic:

Best of luck!!
