Sievert problems

Hi,#
When I try to use my new Sievert it putters and goes out after a minute or two. It will relight immediately, but which allows the silver I’m trying to melt to re-solidify. I’ve tried turning the flame very low and also very high (and most between). Am I doing something wrong. Or is it faulty? What is likely to be the problem?

I bought it from Calor gas (UK) who basically aren’t interested, they say to send it back and they’ll test it. I will take about 6 weeks. I can’t wait that long!

I’ve never used this torch before, but I have used similar torches. You don’t say what model that you have, but as far as I can tell Sievert torches are all atmospheric propane torches. This means that this torch gets its oxygen from the atmosphere (vs bottled oxygen).

Propane is a liquefied gas in a tank. A common problem when using propane, especially in small tanks, is that the tank is not kept upright at all times and a bit of liquid propane leaks into the fuel line, which causes sputters and blow outs. It’s also kind of dangerous. You need to make sure that your propane tank is kept upright and not agitated at all times.

There’s a pretty good chance not keeping your tank upright is the problem. Other that I have no idea what’s wrong.

I will say that out of all of the propane atmospheric torches that I’ve tried, my favorite torch is the Orca torch (sometimes called the EZ torch). I love this torch and use it a lot.

If your Sievert torch keeps giving you grief, I’d consider returning it and getting an Orca torch.

But no matter what, you’ll need to always make sure that your propane tank is kept upright at all times and never agitated.

Best of luck!

Jeff

Hi Helenat29

When I google Sievert torches I see a variety of torches from weed burners to tank toppers to Creme Brulee torches. Which torch are you having troubles with?

And I read you are in the UK. Are Orca torches available to you?

It’s the Sievert professional torch. Unfortunately bought from Calorgas, not Cooksongold or other reputable tool supplier.

Do you mean that it’s one of these models?

Does your torch have a hose?

No, it’s Sievert Pro 86 Jewellers blow torch

There’s actually a fair amount of info about this torch online. I found one UK site that said if you have problems to contact Sievert directly. That might be your best bet. (Sievert is a subsidiary of Rothenberger)

I already said that a common issue with all propane torches is to not keep the tank upright. Another issue could be too much or too little fuel pressure. Before you light the torch for the first time that day, you first need to purge the air in the line. Then when you light the torch use the least amount of gas necessary to ignite it. Once it ignites see what happens. Is it spurting or is it a smooth and even flame. If it’s even, then add in fuel slowly. I’m pretty sure that this torch doesn’t have a valve to adjust the pressure out of the tank, which means all of the pressure adjustment is in the handle.

Hopefully, your problem is just a simple pressure issue. If not, contact Sievert. They should be able to help you resolve this issue.

Best of luck!
