Sharkstooth cap

Greeting to the Ganoksin community,

I have been asked to set a cap on a sharkstooth for a pendant.

After searching the topic without success, I reach out to you.

How does one secure the cap to the sharkstooth? Is it glued? Is the post of the bale screwed into the tooth?

I am at a loss and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here are some photos.

Kind regards,

Lois

It will be interesting to see what others suggest! As far as I know all shell, bone and teeth expand and contract with variations in humidity, so glue is part of the solution. I’ve never known folks to drill and utilize a post with a shark tooth setting, but that certainly would help to secure it.

Looks like fun!

Jeff

I haven’t done a sharks tooth, but I have set other tapered objects like a sharks tooth. If it is tapered enough, you might be able to just roll the edge that same as you would bezel setting a stone. One piece that I did wasn’t tapered enough, so I cut a shallow ridge around it to roll the bezel into. Like Jeff said, you might double stitch with glue. I would avoid drilling into it. Good luck…Rob

Greetings Rob and Jeff and thank you for your responses.

The student has decided on the cap that sits on top of the tooth, so the option to roll the gold into the tooth, like a bezel setting, is no longer an option. Thank you for that idea, though.

Any ideas how to make this cap hold??

Kind regards,

Lois

Looks like a peg and glue the same way that you might secure a pearl. My brain keeps designing an open setting of two oval shaped rings (round, square, flat wire) that are soldered above the middle of the top with a jump ring soldered to the top of the joint. The oval rings would have to be pulled apart enough to clear the tooth and then carefully bent in to keep the tooth from escaping. Do you really want a spring clasp or a real bail?…Rob

Hi Rob,

Yes, we are changing the bale setup that is in the photo to a ring.

I have read your interesting suggestion about the open setting, and I don’t seem to get it. Would you be so kind as to elaborate a little more on what you mean?

Are you saying the rings are soldered to the top of the cap and that the tooth is grabbed from above? And that they can be made of round, square, or flat wire? Any sketch would be greatly appreciated, as I am intrigued by this idea of yours.

A peg pearl setting sounds like an option too.

Kind regards,

Lois

Hi,

sooo…what does the back of this cap look like?…same size/ depth?…longer?…

it is saying “glue” to me…maybe rough up the top of the sharkstooth?…give it a little more “tooth” for the glue to grab onto?…maybe something on the underside of the cap for the glue to grab onto as well?…like…a jumpring…some balls…a coil…

Hi Julie,

This photo is the only angle I have. I like your idea of creating a part that continues down the back a little, for added support. Thank you so much.

Kind regards,

Lois
