G’day Bob: Pure methylene iodide has a specific gravity
(density) of 3.32

  • Practical Gemmology, Robert Webster, NAG Press, London: probably

Bob,

Methylene Iodide or to state its more updated name Di-Iodomethane
is most probably what you are thinking of.

Hello Robert,

Methylene Iodide.
SG : 3.33

Methylene Iodide is the most useful specific gravity liquid to the
gemmologist. It possess a higher density than most of other pure
liquids, but also do have a high refractive index, RI : 1.74 which
gives its great value.

Methylene iodide diluted with Monobromonaphtalene to an SG of 3.05
will distinguished between :

  • Tourmaline, SG : 3.05, the tourmaline will suspend.
  • Nephrite Jade, SG : 3.00, nephrite will float.
  • Jadeite, SG : 3.34, jadeite will sink (very slowly).

Methylene iodide is very usefull for ‘immersion method’.

 What would be the liquid for specific gravity 3.32<<

3.32 SG liquid is pure methylene iodide. The others in a typical
SG set, 2.57, 2.62, 2.67 & 3.05, are mixtures of methylene iodide &
benzyl benzoate. There’s an aroma to most of them that alot of
folks find offensive. The lower SG’s, 2.57-2.67, have a tendency to
darken with age. A few small pieces of copper in each container
helps prevent the darkening.
