Sanding sticks

We made some new sanding sticks in the studio yesterday, and I
thought I’d pass along our choice of materials.

The “sticks” are wood paint stirring sticks generally available
at hardware and paint stores. The abrasives used were the plastic
backed 3M micro graded abrasive sheets (from Rio Grande I think)
in 40 or 30um (micron) grit cut lengthwise into 1" wide strips.
Several other grits are available, these are nice fine to medium
cutting grits. To attach the abrasive paper to the sticks use
foam double sided tape- 1" wide. The paper contours nicely to
curved surfaces.

Foam ? Then the double wide tape holds the paper on under
sanding conditions?

Just try to pry it off! When the sticks are worn out- into the
refining barrel.
