Re-learning metalsmithing

Currently I am re-learning jewelry/metalsmithing as I have been away
from it for 25yrs. Checking out books from the library is helping me
decide which one are worth purchasing and helping me start from
scratch again.

Recently I am checked out a book “Jewelry Design, The Artisans
Reference”, by Elizabeth Olver, when I checked on line to buy this
great book, I see it is out of print and those that have it for sale
want $150 for it! Also found a book by the same author titled “The
Jeweller’s Directory of Shape and Form” in paperback. The cover is
identical. Does any one know if it is the same book? The library does
not have it, any help any one can offer would be great.

Also, I was wondering if any one had any suggestions on what and
where to purchase my “starter kit”. Lots of out there
and a little overwhelming, I live in Michigan and will be taking a
workshop next month. The instructor only suggested Rio Grande, but
thought there might be places closer so shipping would be less.

Thank you for any help any one offers, it will be greatly
appreciated! Jane

Theory and Practice of Goldsmithing by Erhard Brepohl

As an aside…I took this one with me to the hospital for company
during a 10 day stay recently. While I was napping, my husband picked
it up and looked through it. When I awoke, he said, “This is a text
book…a real text book…why are you reading a textbook? This is
would be like me carrying around my Thermodynamics text!” He is still
shaking his head over it a week later. I don’t care…it is a
wonderful resource!

Like you, I read the Theory and Practice of Goldsmithing by Brephol
from cover to cover when it was first published. Its interesting,
well written and packed full of very useful and relevant
You can tell your husband that it is nothing like carrying around a
thermodynamic text. I have a shelf full of those from my university
days and I don’t believe that I was ever able to read even a single
chapter on thermodynamics from beginning to end!
