Rawhide mallets

Recently I got a new rawhide mallet which was all lacquered. It is
quite hard and, unlike my old one, dents metal sheet when I’m trying
to flatten the sheet a bit. Is there a process by which to “break
in” a new rawhide mallet? Thanks in advance!

Hi Judy, I ground mine down a little on the grinding wheel.

Hello Judy, Use a very coarse file to remove the lacqered surface.
Then soak the mallet in water overnight. When it is dry, it should be
soft enough to use. Tom Arnold
