Presto-lite torch regulator setup

Hi, I’ve just set up my presto-lite air/acetylene torch (1 regulator)
after a 5 year break. Have checked the torch, and all is well. What I
can’t remember is how much air to introduce by unscrewing the “air
mixing?” part? I started by making the chamber BD open, but really
can’t remember what I’m looking for. Seems that the more air
introduced, the blue flame gets a bit longer…any suggestions.

Also, I know that a small pop is normal when turning off the flame,
but I’m getting quite a loud pop, with a bit of a flame. What would
this be due to?

Thanks.

Suzanne,

I know that a small pop is normal when turning off the flame, but
I'm getting quite a loud pop, with a bit of a flame. What would
this be due to? Where is this 'bit of flame'? Is it out the torch
nozzle or in the air holes at the bottom of the torch handle?

If its out of the nozzle,I have come to expect this from a new
torch. It might be left over lubricant or cotton that is stuffed
into the bottom of the torch Tip for packing. Check that last. I got
a tip that still had the whole wad in there. There could be other
reasons but these are what I have come across.

If the flame is out the air holes, call the maker right away because
something’s wrong. Had this happen also. They will contact RIO and
send you a new torch body. Smith has excellent customer service.
Don’t know about others.

As for the air ratio: do you want an oxidizing atmosphere or a
reducing one? More blue reducing; More orange /yellow oxidizing.

Hope this helps!
