Possible to resize?

I have a client that wants this ring resized to one size smaller. It’s a large marquise cut citrine in silver… I don’t want to damage the gem or disturb the setting so I’m not sure if this is actually a wise idea. Any advice?

Can you show us an image of the other side where the ring will be cut open and resoldered? The probably answer is yes it can be done, but your question is it a wise idea?

It depends on how wide the silver shank is or if there’s something complicated about the bottom of the ring. If the stone isn’t pulled, then it will have to be protected from heat. There’s other possibilities, but my favorite way is to submerge just the stone under water held with tweezers in a tin can (or similar) leaving the area to be soldered exposed. It takes a fair amount of heat. I will say, I’ve done this countless times in my career, but it’s one of my least favorite repair jobs.

To size the ring down one size will mean removing approximately 2.5 mm. Sometimes you have to make the ring be egg shaped because making the ring round again will wreck the setting. I can’t tell if this will be case or not from the picture.

Let’s see the back of the ring and what others have to say as well.

It’s possible, dependent on shank thickness. In a worst-case scenario, remove a 2,5mm piece from center, then cut a narrow groove in the upper sides of the shank, then laser weld.

maybe sawing apart bottom and resoldering isn’t the best way — what about adding a thickness of metal on the lower interior of the shank? to size one size down wouldn’t be such a hard task? I guess to protect the stone, a laser application?
