I cut a nice piece of lapis about 1.5" high and decided to set it in heavy walled setting made from a piece of scrap half round wire that I had left over from another project. Setting the stone required that I move a lot of metal and it resulted in the jump ring being a little off center. Now I need to figure out how to fix it or if I can. My thoughts are:
- See if the ring will pull a bit to the left.
- Remove the ring and try to weld on a new one with my pulse arc welder.
- Remove the ring and drill and tap a hole and screw in a threaded jump ring.
- Remove the ring and set the whole thing in a frame with prongs
- Don’t worry about it.
Any additional thoughts would be appreciated. Following are a front and back picture that are, for some reason, a bit out of focus. Thanks…Rob

The main thing is, how does it hang when viewed from the front.

You make a good point, I haven’t added the bail and will temporarily to see how it hangs. Thanks…Rob

If you don’t like how it hangs, I would definately first try to bend it over a little and see how you like that. You could stretch it a bit and make it more oval and might be able to get it in a better position that way. After that, I would give your welder a try. Practice on something else if you haven’t used it for that purpose yet.

So it’s the engraving that is not inline with the lapis’s plumb line. Will you try to remedy that? Is there enough metal in the backplate that you can polish out the engraving and do it again?
No, I am happy with the engraving. The jump ring just looked off to the centerline of the stone, but when I added the bail, everything kind of came into focus. I always have trouble getting a jump ring on an oval shaped bezel as there is a definite, if not physical, visual center and I usually miss it. Thanks for the suggestion. I usually add an engraving if there is a lot of room on the back of a bezel. If the stone is somewhat translucent, I may also cut out a window from the back plate leaving room for any stamping. Thanks…Rob
