Oval bracelet mandrel

Aloha, I’ve trolled the orchid forum for a few months now. Just
wanted to add my $.02, And hopefully get some help. I run a gold
wholesale business with a retail tool and supply division on Oahu,
Hawaii.

I get stumped daily by some of the questions my customers pose to
me. I hope you may help with some of them. My father is a jeweler and
my uncle runs a similar gold wholesale business in Van Nuys,
California. So I’m pretty well versed in the theory, if not the
practice of gold smithing.

I do have one question some of you may be enlightened on. I’m
looking for an oval bracelet mandrel to sell in Hawaii. It has to
have a total circumference at the fat end to accomodate a 9.5" piece
of metal. I have the round mandrel. Any suppliers you may know of?
I’ve called India and Italy. Nobody wants to touch it. Pleased to meet
you, Sako

Aloha Sako, have the bracelet mandrel made up in hardwood to the
shape and taper you desire. Kind regards, Rex Steele Merten in wint’ry Australia

Hi Sako,

If it can be a hard wood, check a hardware store or industrial
supplier. Ask to look at the replacement pick ax handles. They are
generally oval shaped & taper on the pick end of the handle. I don’t
have one handy, so I don’t know if they’ll fit your circumference
requirement.

Sako, You might try Phillipe in West Palm Beach, FL (561) 471-0890.
I bought a steel oval tapered mandrel (12-inches circumference at
large end) from him a year or so ago, and I think he had more.
