[New Orchid Gallery] Kate Bajic

#1

Kate Bajic

I=B4m a UK based jewellery designer.

Kate discovered a love of jewellery design whilst on her art
foundation course at Loughborough University. She found a natural
affinity working with metal and spent long hours making intricate
models of her ideas to help her visualise her designs. Kate has
always had a hands on approach and her jewellery is designed and
made as much as possible by hand using simple tools. This way of
working gives each piece of jewellery it=B4s own unique form and
finish, as working by hand will give it=B4s own subtle variations
during the making process.

Inspiration for Kate=B4s work comes from looking at natural structures
and forms. Pieces tend to evolve through the making process rather
than being drawn out beforehand and are produced as limited edition
or one off items in both silver and high carat gold. Precious metal
is hammered, reticulated or drilled to create texture and overlaid
with delicate moving discs; silver is highlighted with details of
rich 22ct yellow gold or oxidised to give a dramatic dark finish.
Long wrap-over chains with free moving elements and sculptural
shapes are forged and soldered and necklaces and rings are formed
from hand pierced shapes. Collections of work have developed to
include bracelets, rings, drop and stud earrings, wrap-over
necklaces, pendants and brooches.

After graduating in 2003 with a first class honours degree Kate
became self-employed and Kate Bajic Hand Made Jewellery was born.
Since then her jewellery has been exhibited in galleries throughout
the UK and Ireland and at a wide range of exhibitions. In 2005 Kate
also began to teach jewellery workshops, these have proved so
popular that she now runs them on a regular basis at several
different venues in the East Midlands and has also begun offering
private tuition from her Leicestershire based studio. Kate really
enjoys the chance this offers to share her passion for jewellery and
continues to teach alongside running her jewellery design business.
