My name is Robert Weinstock. I was a die cutter in a jewelery shop
in San Francisco for seventeen years. We made wedding rings with
classic ornament. Since 1994, I’ve been using the skills I learned
there to make high-end collectors knives, and occasionally tsubas
(Japanese sword guards). I approach knife making as sculptural
exercises, since I studied sculpture in college. The tsuba in the
photo is made of pattern-welded iron, forged for me by Ric Furrer, a
blacksmith in Wisconsin. I carved it from a solid piece. My knives
are made of tool steel, and damascus steel made by various people.
