Micro Alloys

Hi Noel,

I have used micro alloys from PureGold both gold and silver
varieties. They are nice to work with for fabrication, however they
take some getting used to because they are so soft before heat
treating. Also you need special solders and soldering techniques to
maintain the purity for quality stamping requirements. Casting them
requires special equipment to provide for a inert atmosphere around
the melt/casting as the alloying materials will oxidize away if you
melt them in air and you will no longer have a micro alloy. The
ability to have the color of the pure (or almost pure) metals is a
great asset but the cost and technical requirements limits their use
to special projects. – Jim Binnion
