Metalsmiths (Alloy) Calculator

Does anyone know where I can get a copy? This is Jeffrey Herman’s brainchild (for which his website is still taking payments; I “bought” a copy before I realized who the developer was), and of course I haven’t received it. Is anyone tending his website? Thanks

You can find information about websites using who.is. I found this:

Registered to Herman, Jeffrey
Email JEFF@HERMANSILVER.COM
Last Updated Jan 02, 2025
Expires On Jan 17, 2026

I ordered silver laser wire less than a year ago and received it. Possibly whoever is managing the site is checking only once in a while, or perhaps they are just letting the site expire next month.

You must have ordered by mail, as per directions on the website:

"Please fill-out online, print & mail the below information with your check payable to:
Jeffrey Herman • PO Box 786 • West Warwick, RI 02893, 401/461-6840"

Since there is no way to contact anyone via the website, the best thing might be to mail a letter.

I don’t know what the status is of Jeffrey Herman’s website? He died a couple of years ago or so. I Googled this calculator and it’s a free download if you dig around a little bit. I Googled Jeffrey Herman calculator and it popped up.

Here’s a couple of free metal calculators from David Fell.

Sorry I don’t know more about the current status of Jeffrey Herman’s website. Hope all this helps!

Jeffs website is way to important to let expire - how can we get some organization to renew his url and keep his incredibly useful information available. Ganoksin???

Assuming his heirs would agree, the reference material could be transferred to Ganoksin rather than keeping the website up, with all its personalized content. Perhaps a fund could be set up for donations to cover the cost. I would contribute to it, and likely others would as well.

There may be only a month to gain approval before the website expires and the content is lost.

Thanks, Neil, I’ll send snail mail and hope someone gets it.
I agree with Judy, his website is too important to let it die; I like the idea of Ganoksin taking it over, and would contribute to a fund for make that possible.

If you do a “whois” you can find the owner of the website - I think they are alias urls hermansilver.com being one. His enourmous compendium of silver stuff would be a tragedy to lose. I’ll happily help to get it transferred - like $$ help. Judy

I will contribute

It took a few days to get things sorted out. I reached out to a metalsmith friend who is close with Jeffrey Herman’s family. The website isn’t going away. Just because the domain bill hasn’t been paid yet, it’s not due for over a month from now.

I’m going to send CarolineR11662 a direct message so I can pass on her question about what happened with her purchase that didn’t arrive.

I’m sure that Jeffrey Herman’s family really appreciates the positive comments about his contributions to our field.

Judy, a while back you posted a question about making your own germanium silver. Did you do it? Was the process as straightforward as it seemed (melt other metals, add germanium last)? Was the result usable? Worth the effort?
Thanks

I’ve not done it. I was musing because I do have some germanium. Jim Binnion would be the guy to ask. Judy

Caroline, I sent you a direct message through Orchid a couple of days ago, but haven’t heard back. The person in charge of Jeffery Herman’s website reached out to me. She doesn’t see that you ever placed an order and wants to talk to you. Please reach out to me so we can clear this up. I’m going to send you another Orchid direct message. You should see a green envelope symbol. Click on that and we can communicate separately. Thanks! Jeff

Jeff, I thought I replied to this already, once in email and once using the green envelope on this page, but now I don’t see it. I’d be happy to talk with the person in charge of Jeffrey Herman’s website; I sent you my contact info in the email. Thanks again for acting as intermediary.

Hi Caroline, I just sent you a new Orchid Direct Message. Sorry it’s all been so much trouble.

I’m not sure where you emailed me as I don’t have a Ganoksin email address? I just moderate the forum.

Thanks! Jeff

Liz not only contacted me, she sent me a copy of the Metalsmith’s Calculator, and encouraged me to share it with anyone who wants it, free of charge.

I don’t see a way to upload it here (I’ve read the info on FTP, but haven’t been able to make it work on my iPad) so I’ve put it on google drive. Here’s the link - it takes a couple of clicks to be able to download:

Many thanks to JeffG for all the help facilitating this!

This is a PDF. I don’t think that it is live to allow any calculations…Rob
