Metal arts program at SDSU

Hi, I’m the clueless newbie. My daughter, for whom I print out
the digest and forward it to her (computerless) location, is a
metal arts student, considering a transfer to San Diego State
University. Any comments on the metal arts program at SDSU would
be appreciated. I’m unlikely to offer advice, but will relay
questions when I’m asked to do so or when they occur to me.

hello there! as far as i know san diego state has a very good
reputation in the metal arts department! helen shirk was among
faculty until not long ago (maybe she still is?) and recently
arline fish joined the group. i think your daughter will be in
very good hands! cheers, ema

p.s.: helen shirk and arline fish are among the most influencial
contemporary jewelers and metalsmiths on international
level…their work is on numerous catalogs and
publications.

Donna - I am a graduate of the metalsmithing program at San
Diego State. It was some time ago but I still live here in San
Diego and keep in touch with the two professors who teach there.
Helen Shirk has been teaching there since 1975. Arline Fisch has
been teaching there maybe ten years longer. Arline has semi
retired and only teaches every other semester. You can contact
both Arline and Helen via email. You should be able to get their
addresses via the SDSU web site. (http://www.sdsu.edu).
Graduates from the program are currently teaching at various
schools and universities around the USA, as well as being
independent metalsmiths/jewelers. Good Luck.
