Masking liver of sulpher

I want to mask liver of sulpher under a stone. Does anyone know of a
permanent way to do this that would not affect the stone or setting
in the long run?

If you are trying to hide the liver of sulphur black finish, put
something metallic that won’t be affected, over the silver surface
and under the stone before you set the stone. Even aluminum foil or
silver colored gum wrapper foil can work. If instead you’re trying
to protect the nice black finish, then just don’t worry. It’s not
going anywhere, and would form over time anyway. If you’re trying to
use liver of sulphur on the outside of the piece without it getting
to the metal under the stone, wax, such as red sticky wax, can be
smeared over the seam between bezel annd stone to keep the liquid
out while oxidizing, but don’t dip too warm or the wax will melt.
Easier is just to apply the LOS carefully with a brush rather than
dipping, and avoid are as you don’t want to oxidize. You’d want to
mix it up stronger, and use it hot as you brush it in, perhaps also
warming the work a bit, so you can see the black develop quickly
while you brush it on, rather than trying to get it to develop color
more slowely.

I like to cut a piece of mylar from a balloon, candy wrapper or chip
bag for behind a stone that needs a permanently shiny surface.

Belle - you might try Krylon spray lacquer or clear nail polish.
Renaissance wax is not permanent enough. I’d vote for clear nail
polish. Or a more high end application would be white gold or
platinum - either as fabricated plate or use a plating solution of
the whitest gold you can get - or nickel. The white metals won’t be
affected by the liver of sulfur.

Use Frisket for masking liver of sulfur. This is one I’ve used,

but there are other brands, too.

Hope this helps,
