Making Money Clip?

Is there anything to making a money clip, other than the obvious,
fold it? Does anything need to be done to make it springy? (Beyond
the usual burnishing?)

I’m thinking about the tension kind, not the kind with a hinge.

Thanks.

Hi Elaine, I made a batch of money clips for co-workers and got some
interesting feedback. One half of the fold flips up a little to
facilitate easy insertion of the money. The suggestion I got was to
make sure that bottom lip extends a little further than the one with
the flip. I have them too close and it was harder to use.

I have always used Nickle Silver for the back spring part. It will
mantain its shape and spring quite well.

The best way I have found for making tension type money clips is to
anneal the material to make shaping easier, then re-anneal in the
oven at 1100 degrees for about half an hour. After quenching, back
into the oven at 650 or 700 degrees for another hour to heat treat
it. This gives you a springy piece without the stresses that often
cause cracks later on at the bend point. You adjust the temperatures
a little depending on the metal you are working with.

Question on money clips - my dd wants to make them using a wire wrap
technique. Has anyone ever tried this? Any tips/suggestions?

Hey Beth. Well, I had some wire and was playing around and came up
with this first rough pattern. It needs a touch of refinement, but
it was simple to do and lends itself to variations. Also, the fact
that it is a bit plain, I think, makes it masculine enough for most
men.

Take a look and tell me what you think.

Sorry about the photographs, but the lighting is not right today.
