Magic Flame Flux

Was: Soldering Weights

Now I use Magic Flame mixed with denatured alcohol (it comes as an
almost-dry paste you can mix with either water or alcohol).

Noel: Never heard of Magic Flame. Where do you buy it - and does it
keep well once mixed? Do you need to light it to burn off the alcohol
after you apply it, as you do with the Boric Acid/alcohol mixture?

I don’t remember where I bought it… I’m still working on my first
jar. A quick Google shows it at Shor International, RMG Jewelry
Supply, and no doubt many others. Like any alcohol flux, it has to be
kept air tight or the alcohol evaporates, but you can always add
more. You can burn it off or not. For demanding soldering situations,
I burn it off and add a drop of My-T-Flux or Cupronil to the joint.
(Same is true of boric/alcohol). For REALLY important situations, I
flux, heat, spray on Cupronil, My-T-Flux or even that new ceramic
stuff, can’t think of the name. I like options. I also have hald a
dozen wire solders, a similar number of powdered solders and even
more paste solders, and that’s just silver…
