Looking for book

Hi all,

I’d like to find a jewelry fabricating book that will show me how
to make a setting for a pear shaped cabochon, that mounts from the
back. Kinda like a headlight on a car that has that nice rim
around it. Can anybody tell me if a beginner can pull this kind
of job off? Thanks.

Hi Sandi,

how to make a setting for a pear shaped cabochon, that mounts
from the back.

Check out ‘The Complete Metalsmith’ by Tim McCreight. It’s usually
available at most jewelry suppliers for about $20.00.

See pages 117-130 for various ways to set stones. The pages may
vary depending on the publish date of the volumn, but the pages
listed will be close.

Have you made any round bezels??? If so, then you should be
able to use the same method to make a pear shaped one.

Use fine silver bezel wire, wrap it around the stone, mark where
it should be cut, solder the bezel ends together. Fit it around
the stone once again to get the correct shape, solder to a 26 or
28 g. bottom piece (slightly larger than the diameter of the
shaped bezel wire) cut off excess after soldering the bezel wire
to the base, file where you cut off the excess . . . you should
have a nicely formed “cup” Now, you can solder the cup to
whatever.

Have fun! The “Encyclopedia of Jewelry Making” has lots of
pictures (I think the author is Jenks Mcgrath) and is easily
understood.

Sandra,

I’m pretty sure that a book published here in the UK “Jewellery
Making” by Sylvia Wicks has instructions for exactly what you
are looking for.
