Laser welding and pearls

I would like to make a silver cage around a pearl. Do you think it is possible to laser weld next to a pearl or will the pearl scorch?

SteveS11930,
How close are you talking about laser welding next to a pearl? You often share images of objects that you’re making. Can you share a proposed image of this object? That will help folks answer your question.

Thanks!! Jeff

Even if you are a distance away from the pearl, metal can reflect the beam and destroy the pearl.

Just use a shield next to the pearl. Like a thin piece of silver polished brightly. It will reflect off.

jeff-g asked for an image. I drew a diagram.

The idea is to have metal enveloping the pear. So either soldered slightly above the pearl (top) or right on the pearl (bottom). I take it the second option would be out of the question. The top, maybe?

Thanks for sharing your drawing! Now that we can see what you’re considering, we can see that there’s no space between the metal and the pearl or at least almost no metal between it and the pearl. I’m going to go with what some of the others are saying that it’s going to be difficult to guarantee there won’t be any damage to the pearl.

If it’s an inexpensive pearl, you’re brave, have steady hands and are good with a laser welder you could try it.

Poodlepup3’s suggestion of using polished silver as a shield sounds like it could be very helpful in some situations.

I took an advanced laser welding class at LaserStar headquarters once. They recommend using removable poster putty as a laser shield. I’ve used that many times in laser welded jewelry repair work.

Otto Frei sells a specific putty for that purpose if you want to try that. I think this works well too in many situations.

Hope all that helps!
