Laser welding 24k yellow gold

Am making a 24k yellow gold band that will fit inside a platinum
band. Has anyone lased welded 24k yellow and what settings do you
use?

Thanks
Dayna

Finally some discussion on laser welding. I have worked with 24k on
my laser and have found that 265v 5.5ms 5hz and 8 works well with
me. I think I might be working with 22k, but atleast thats
something to go on. I am real curious how it turns out so keep us
informed.

thanks for the reply. I will let you know. I also called Crafford as
they are the manufacturer of my laser. They were real close to
the figures you used. So thanks.

Scott, those are excellent settings… so how is the stuller/rofin
laser working for you?

I am glad those settings were similar to the Crawford Laser. I use
the Rofin from Stuller. I shopped both, but went with Andy the tool
guy at Stuller. I like Ganoksin and it seems as though Stuller is
committed to open discussions and education on lasers. They offer
two laser workshops yearly which is very supportive. I acutally
considered the Crawford very seriously, and it wasn’t an issue of
either one being any better, but I thought that Stuller will be
around for many years to come and ten years from now I know were
they will be if I need parts. It has changed my whole approach on
jewelry repair and at first I was hungry for discussion on lasers
and techniques, and kept on getting the same advice, you have to
become so familiar with the settings that you can adjust them
quickly, knowing which characteristics work in each sitution. I
acutally used my toach this week to take a head off a mounting which
was a basic reality check considering I went probably a month
without turning it on. Quick hint: When retipping use 28guage
14k/palladium wg. It dosen’t splatter and the control is amazing
when you form it back into the prong. May you have many happy
welds.
