Laser engraving services

I have a customer who 's husband has past away recently, they had a
three year old son. The customer wants to give the son a charm with
a photo of his father engraved onto it. I assume a computerized
laser engraver is the thing to do this, but I have no source. Does
anyone have a good recommendation for an engraver that could do such
a thing. Thanks Mark (WI, USA)

Hi Mark, Rembrandt Charms has PHOTOART charms. They laser engrave
the picture onto silver or gold using any picture. They
state:“Photoart Charms enable life’s most memorable moments to be
reproduced as heirloom charms. Any photograph can be used and the
original is returned. Rembrandt’s exclusive picture protecting
process includes reproducing your photo, setting it in an oval,
heart, or rectangle frame with the choice of a scroll or polished
border. All styles are available in Sterling Silver, Gold Plate, 10
Karat and 14 Karat Gold. The back of each charm can be engraved for
additional personalization.”

I would like to mention that this is not laser engraving… There is
no way that a laser will produce a full color photograph as they say
on their site. The process is done through something very similar to
a printing process. I had key chains done in Thailand using this
method… It worked quite well. It is not laser engraved.

Roland makes a photo printer for metal. I believe it works similar
to a dot matrix printer. It will not render color by may be able to
simulate greyscale. Gold Machinery in Providence handles these
machines and may be able to refer you to someone that provides this
service. You can see about this machine on their website

There is an independant designer building a laser cutting tool that
will be on the market in the not too distant future. I have no
personal intrest in aquiring such a tool, but it seems like it will
be a remarakable breakthrough for those who do. It’s going to be
around 40,000 I think to get all set up , so it’s use will probably
be in larger manufacturing, co-ops or those offering tyhe service for
a fee. Just so you know. If iI learn anymore about when and how it
will be marketed, I’ll post it. Peace. marianne
