Jewelry In Music

Hi Jessee,

and of course Desmond takes his trolley to the jeweler's store /
buys a twenty-karat golden ring (The Beatles, "Oh-bla-di
Oh-bla-da") (I always thought 20K was kinda soft for a band that
would receive daily wear...)

It was probably supposed to be a 20 Carat gold ring. (a 20 Ct. rock.)
Gotta love English and all the homonyms…

Meanwhile, I’m not sure if this should be a separate thread, or a
sub- head of this one, but I always listen to the radio in the
studio, and every shop I’ve ever worked in has had music of some sort
going in the shop. I suspect we all spend a lot of time listening to
music as we work.

I’ve had lots of time to listen to various things while I was
working, and sometimes the songs have inspired pieces. (Emerald
Lies
and Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors being the two most
obvious of mine. (Available in the metals portfolio section of
alberic.net))

Anybody else ever make pieces inspired by music?

Ever have a song that’s inspired you to want to make a piece, but
you just can’t figure out exactly what to do? (Fleetwood Mac’s
Landslide has been echoing around my head for 20 years. The chorus
about ‘if you see my reflection in a snowcovered hill…’ really
speaks to me, but I’ve never managed to figure out how to handle it.
I’ve had lots of ideas, but none that were right.) (Frustrating,
isn’t it?)

So, musical inspiration anybody?
Regards,
Brian.

Ooohh, I’ll have to say “Diamonds are a Girl’s best friend”… The
classic Marilyn Monroe version of course!!

Though on a fun note… The Beatles will probably stay in my head
all day with "Desmond takes a trolley to the jewellery store… Buys
a twenty carat golden ring… Takes it home to Molly waiting at the
door… And as he gives it to her she begins to sing… Ob-La-Di,
Ob-La-Da

Couldn’t resist adding an old favorite- Romeo & Juliet by Dire
Straights:

When you can fall for chains of silver
You can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything
You promised me thick and thin
Now you just say oh Romeo yeah
You know I used to have a scene with him

Beck- The Girl

“I saw her, yeah I saw her with her black tongue tied
Round the roses
Fist pounding on a vending machine
Toy diamond ring stuck on her finger
With a noose she can hang from the sun
And put it out with her dark sunglasses
Walking crooked down the beach”

I like to think of “toy” ring to mean a meaningless relationship. ;o)
