I am going to be in Auckland the first weekend of July followed by a
week in Brisbane. Does anyone know of any good rock shops in either
city that I can find fun and unusual material to cut? Also any good
venues to see contemporary jewelry and other fine craft?

Whilst I don’t know much about Auckland (I live in the South Island,
and keep away from large towns and heavy traffic) I do know that one
of the best rock shops in the country - probably the best, is called
‘Wilderness Gems’ at River Road, Ngatea, at the foot of the
Coromandel Peninsular by the Firth of Thames, in the North Island…
They have been operating for many years and have just about any rock
you can think of - and a whole lot you can’t.

I have found them very good to deal with, though their prices tend to
be on the high side - but they have a virtual monopoly. If you go
there, be prepared to spend an entire morning at least. They took
over an old dairy factory and filled it with rocks. Aladdin’s Cave has
nothing on it! –
