Jewellery Drawing Book - recommendations

Despite being a goldsmith for 25 years, I have never really learned
to draw jewellery. I am not much of an artist and have never really
had a formal art course. I have considered taking the GIA course that
teaches how to draw but the formality and the cost do not appeal to
me.

I am hoping that you may be able to recommend books that deal with
drawing jewellery specifically. Recommendations on books that deal
with jewellery design would also be of interest.

I am looking forward to the combined knowledge of all who are here.
Thank you. Franklin

Techniques of Jewelry Illustration & Color Rendering by Aldolfo
Mattiello is a good choice and readily available thru Rio Grande
among other sources. I took a class from George McLean (who’s work
is in the book) at Wildacres and loved it. It was amazing how
quickly we all started producing realistic looking renderings.

These books are by Maurice Galli, Dominique Riviere and Fanfan Li.
The first in the series is called ‘The Art of Jewelry Design’ and
would be the best one to get if you have not had any previous
jewellery rendering experience. It takes you step by step through
inspiration, drawing and colours & even shows you how to render
gemstones realistically.

Where would you find this book? I checked Amazon but not there. The
other book that I liked was “Practical Jewelry Rendering” by Tim
McCreight…very good techniques and exercises.

If you search Amazon using Fanfan Li, all three books come up. I
ordered mine through them some months ago, the books are by special
order and were certainly worth the wait.

As someone else mentioned, the book covering rings and earrings has
the most useful on rendering. The others don’t go into
details and stages of drawing, instead they generally present you
with finished drawings.

Marianne.

I’d suggest a book on drawing in general. “How to Draw What You See
by Rudy De Reyna. It covers Structure, form, shading to Acrylic and
other mediums. You’ll find it on Amazon .

Good Fortune,
Guy…

For the Galli Book–check out www.addall.com and
www.bookfinder.com. They both show copies of the book at widely
varying prices(both used and new). These are great sources for any
books you are looking for. Sandra
