Rio Grande Albuquerque tools catalog has several benches,
1-800-545-6566, other catalogs I have with benches are all
eastern. I’m considering having my bench made by a woodworker,
as I need it to be break down transportable (I move frequently).
Much will depend on the ultimate price for custom made, but you
might consider that as you are specific in terms of woods used,
etc. Happy hunting! Eileen, Snow Goose Designs, Medford, MA

Billy, Here’s a thought. I work in a high school in Indiana and
our woodshop kids make fabulous wood furniture which can sell for
thousands of dollars. Being a rural area, some of these superbly
talented kids cannot afford the materials and will often make
these projects on a sponsored basis, wherein a person or business
will provide the materials and specs for a piece and in return
get an incredible deal. Most of the time, the kids just want to
be able to make a fine piece of furniture, not any money. You
might want to check out local high schools or tech schools and
see what their programs are like. A friend of mine got a Mahogany
desk appraised by his insurance for 1,500 dollars for a mere
250$. Just a thought for anyone interested, Terry Swift, Corydon,

Hi Billy,

Have you tried Frie & Borel (sp?), their catalog usually lists
some nice ones. Rio Grande also has some. Barring that, I’m sure
a local cabinet shopt could build what yo want if you help them
out with a few pictures &=
your requirements.

bench that I saw athe Manufacturers show in new york last week.
Too large for my shop, 46 inches, but beautifully made.

Billy- I just had a bench built our of an old hardwood baby
changing table. With minimal conversion it’s perfect. I even put
a sweeps tray on it’s bottom shelf. Janet Phila USA
Dear fellow orchidians, As I am getting ready to move in August and
labor is cheap here and also hard woods I have been excited about
getting a lovely new work bench which would be able to move with me
to my next job. So I ordered one a month ago from a furniture shop
which had done good work on a separate tool cabinet on rollers for me
last year. I gave the owner a picture of one the most expensive work
benches in RIO s catalogue and which had dimensions. But when I went
there today to look at it the work bench is awful ! It became clear
as I pressed the bench top and it moved and the drawers which didn’t
fit and the locks on the drawers wouldn’t keep a two year old child
out, that something was terribly wrong. So after much pushing he
admitted that he had changed his workers and woodworking factory
since he had made me the last piece. I was so disappointed that I
now have to start all over again at a new shop. But this time I must
give them a more detailed picture of what I want. So I am asking for
anyone who has some clear photos of a well made work bench, showing
the underside of the drawers and the method of joining the wood
rather than just slapping on some glue and a rusty nail or two. Can
anyone help please?? They say a picture is worth a 1000 words and in
this case its worth everything.
Thank you very much in advance with any help you can give me.

Check out Frei & Borel, I think they have the nicest benches. Mark

Hi Sharron
Brian here. How are you!! I have just redesigned the insides of our
studio and the benches. I Got the benches and tops made at a local
cabinetmaker, and they’re well made. Photos at
http://www.adam.co.nz/studio/.
One bench is 6.3 meters long and that’s for 6 bench places. Another
is 1500mm long, for one main bench. I can supply you with the details
if you like. But you’ll have to adapt the plans to suit your knee
height etc.
Cheers from the South Pacific - 20C autumn.
