International Gemological Information Reputation?

Hello,

Is IGI (International Gemological Information) a reputable
organization? I’m not familiar with them.

A lady wants me to buy her ring and it is IGI certified. It’s
replacement cost was real high and it made me wonder. Anybody have
any quick info for me.

Thanks again to all of you in advance.

Steven,

Most people that I have talked to in the diamond business over the
years suggest the IGI is somewhat more liberal in their grading
standards than the GIA. This also seems to be the general consensus
on the EGL too. The GIA, despite its recent problems, is still the
standard. Your best bet is to have it appraised by a certified
gemologist.

Hi Steven,

I’m sure I’ll be opening a can of worms here, but that’s nothing
new. First, lest me say that I don’t always agree with GIA’s grading
reports, either. However, my opinion seldom differs more than one
color or clarity grade from theirs, if at all (even though I am GIA
trained). That being said, my opinion often differs as much as two
color grades and one clarity grade from IGI and AGA. If you don’t
posess a graded set of masterstones (diamond, not CZ), or have the
training and experience to grade the stone in question, seriously
consider taking it to an experienced gemologist who does and can.
