I have a book called Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing by Tim
McCreight. It actually describes the technique you’re talking about,
but using a base of copper or brass with the silver solder filling in
indents made by stamping. It mentions using liver of sulphur during
the finishing, though, to darken/redden the base metal. I have no
clue what might work on gold, though.
