I’ve decided to set up a bench and tools at our vacation home (where
I seem to have extra creativity and time). I promised myself that I
will keep the costs to a minimum and am using mostly duplicate tools
noticed that many Orchid members have indicated that they started
with or currently use portable butane torches or similar. I would
appreciate recommendations of specific models that you like
(available in USA).
Thanks so much.
Jamie
p.s. As an aside, it’s not surprising that I’m able to largely stock
a second bench with existing excess tools. Tool junkies unite!

Hi Jamie,
I will need to purchase some sort of torch. I noticed that many
Orchid members have indicated that they started with or currently
use portable butane torches or similar. I would appreciate
recommendations of specific models that you like (available in
USA).
I have used a Proxxon MicroFlam for about 7 years. It’s a great
little torch.
The flame size is adjustable & there’s a built in push button
igniter.

Jamie,
This is a quite large torch to avoid:
The recall notice shows the torch, so you can avoid buying one used.
For a tiny torch, this one is nice:

Hi,
The most common propane torch is Sievert.
Its a U.K site but i assume there is similar in the U.S. They also
appear on ebay occasionally. I just upgraded to Oxy/Propane for
fusing Platinum, but the Sievert is suitable for most gold and
silver jobs, and no blowpipe necessary!
Good luck!
Jon
I haven’t tried the Proxxon, but I’ve just been trying out a Blazer,
and I am definately not impressed.
Noel
Blazer and Proxxon are both made by Prince in Japan.
Blazer is a New York brand and Proxxon is from Luxemburg.
Far superior when compared to the Chinese and Taiwan models.
These are good for entry level hobby.
Nothing to beat a real Acetylene & Oxygen setup (or a Natual Gas &
oxygen).
Even a Propane & Oxygen set up is better. Depends what is accessible
or legal in your area.
My two bits.
