G’day: The answer is yes and no. Hydrogen IS the only pure
gas lighter than air, but coal gas commonly contains a high
percentage of hydrogen (plus carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide,
methane,etc) and is therefore lighter than air. Helium is of
course lighter than air but it is almost completely inert: it
won’t burn in air or any other atmosphere. Cheers
