Hi team,
I’ve been trying for a couple of weeks to make a ring like shown in the pictures below. So far I think this is tube set stones. But I have no idea how the metalsmith got the soldering right.
I’ve tried using polyfilla to create a soldering block that curves. But I just cant get the tube to align the right way. And if its aligned the solder has a tendency to flow up to the top of the ring between the tubes and make setting impossible.
If you have any idea how this is done I would really appreciate the help ! Even if the answer some incredibly expensive machine.
Hello,
when i look at the inside of the ring, there are tiny holes that may be gaps between the bezel bottoms…which would preclude a base band being used…
but then again there are kexpanses where the inside is homogeneous and doesnt look like bezels soldered together, but rather more like it was done in wax…or bezels soldered onto a base band…
…the tiny openings between bezels could have been created in the wax…but they are tiny and seem more trouble than they are worth…investment wise…they would not be an issue if fabricated…
…there are filets in between the bezel tops that could be solder…or flowed flowed wax…
it could be carved in/ modeled with wax, and then cast…
if i were fabricating it, the bezels would need to be tapered…seems more fiddly than it is worth…
if i were making it, i would go with CAD, or wax…

I’d solder in plaster in two halves, then join the halves and clean up.
These are clearly hammer set in tubes not in wire bezels that are pushed over, so solder coming nearly all the way up to the top isn’t an issue.
For nicely tapered tubes swage them into a bezel block.
